Boko Haram: Residents panic as Hausa beggars take over Owerri

Residents of Owerri, the Imo State capital, are now panicking over the increase in numbers of beggars entering the town from the northern region.
They are also condemning the attitude of the beggars whom they claimed flock around churches, motorparks and other public places.
It was gathered that the upsurge in the number of street beggars in Owerri and other cities in the Southeast might not be unconnected with the activities of the Boko Haram sect, which have forced the beggars to relocate.
The beggars who are mainly between the ages of six to fourteen years are also accompanied by their mothers who hang around while the minors hustle for alms.
A school teacher in Owerri, Mr Simon Nwachukwu who spoke with “Daily Post”, lamented the harassment suffered by residents and visitors in the hands of the beggars.
The teacher who described the activities of the beggars as a social nuisance, said they are now becoming security threat to the state.
Another resident, who pleaded anonymity, noted that even though it is good to give to the needy, alms begging should not be encouraged, stating that the boldness with which the beggars pounce on passersby is becoming worrisome.
He said that although Owerri, just like every other city has sizable number of beggars, he warned that the sudden upsurge in the number of beggars calls for concern.
“Given the security situation in the country, it is not out of place to raise alarm over the influx of Hausa into Owerri, we want the security agents to take note of this and safegaurd the lives and property of Owerri residents,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Imo state Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Vitalis Onugu, has assured that the beggars would not constitute any security threat.

Price of Bread Set to be Increased, Again

Following the increase in the price of flour and other products by the government, in a move to encourage the use of cassava, the Lagos State chairman of the Association of Master Bakers and Confectioneries, Mr. Jacob Adejorin has confirmed that price of bread would be increased as from September 1, following the increment of price of flour and other ingredients.
According to Mr Adejorin, “Members of our association has no option but to increase the price of breadbecause of the N1, 000 additions on the price of flour but consumers can be assure of more quality products as we will on 28 of this month hold a seminar to further standardise our products”

According to the results of a poll conducted in 50 cities worldwide, a hotel room in Lagos cost an average of £217.05.

Two Nigerians Sentenced For $50m Bank Fraud In USA

A United States federal judge last Monday sentenced two Nigerians to decades in prison for their roles in a $50 million bank fraud conspiracy that authorities say spanned six states and depended on employees of some of America’s largest banks stealing customers’ identities.
US District Judge Michael Davis sentenced the alleged ringleader, Julian Okeayaninneh, 44, of Colton, California, to 27 years in prison.
Earlier in the day, Davis sentenced Olugbenga Temidago Adeniran, 36, of New York, described as a high-level manager in the conspiracy, to 22 years in prison.
A federal jury in Minnesota convicted Okeayaninneh and Adeniran in February on multiple counts, including bank fraud conspiracy and aggravated identity theft.
So far, 27 people have either pleaded guilty or been convicted in the scheme, in which customer identities were stolen, then bought and sold, and used to create phony bank and credit card accounts, apply for loans or get cash.
Prosecutors say the conspiracy was carried out from 2006 through 2011 in Minnesota, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, New York and Texas.
Authorities said the scheme victimised more than 500 people around the world by stealing their personal and financial information. The Minnesota Financial Crimes Task Force led the investigation, dubbed Operation Starburst, which brought together investigators from local, state and federal agencies.
“Today’s sentences send a clear message to those identity thieves and fraudsters who conspire with dishonest bank employees to wreak havoc on the personal finances of innocent customers,” US Attorney for Minnesota B. Todd Jones said in a statement.
In the statement, Louis Stephens, special agent in charge of the US Secret Service in Minnesota, described the operation as “a complex criminal conspiracy with an organisational hierarchy and effectiveness much like traditional organised crime.”
After Okeayaninneh’s arrest, authorities found more than 8,000 stolen identification documents in his storage locker, including hospital records, bank records and credit reports.
US prosecutors say Adeniran used fraudulent credit cards to obtain cash from banks and buy merchandise from the Mall of America and Southdale Center.
Victims included customers of American Express, Associated Bank, Bank of America, Capital One, Guaranty Bank, JP Morgan Chase Bank, TCF Bank, US Bank, Wachovia Bank, Washington Mutual and Wells Fargo.

Balotelli Told Me To Join Liverpool — Borini

Liverpool striker Fabio Borini has revealed that Manchester City attacker Mario Balotelli played a role in his decision to move to Anfield. The new Reds signing spoke with the controversial Italian during Euro 2012 and said that as soon as he heard of Brendan Rodgers’ interest, he knew he wanted to move to Anfield. The Italian left Roma for the Reds during the summer and claims that the controversial City forward helped him decide to make the switch back to England.
“The fans played a big part [in me joining Liverpool],” Borini told FourFourTwo. When I was with Italy at Euro 2012, I was talking to Balotelli about England, and he told me that Liverpool had the most exciting fans to play in front of. He described it as a beautiful experience. I became aware that Brendan Rodgers wanted me, and once I got the official request I knew what to do. I spoke with Roma to discuss it and we came to an agreement.”
The 21-year-old also claimed that, despite preferring to play as a centre forward, he would be happy to feature in a variety of new positions for his new team.
“I am a striker but I played right and left at Roma. I think I have the attributes to fill the manager’s approach,” Borini added. “I like to work hard for the team, which is what his tiki-taka style demands. I just try to be available and always offer an option. I love scoring goals and hope to get many more wearing the red of Liverpool.”

Madonna Sued for Defending Gay Rights at Russian Concert

Last week, Madonna delivered a fiery speech that supports gay rights amid violence threats to her concert in Russia. Some Russian activists have launched a millions-of-dollars lawsuit against her, claiming they were offended by her support for gay rights during the August 9 concert in St. Petersburg.

Madonna was crossing the law passed by Russian government in February that makes it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors. During her concert which was attended by children as young as 12, she said, "The gay community here, and all around the world, have the same rights, to be treated with dignity, with respect, with tolerance, with compassion, with love."

Alexander Pochuyev, a lawyer representing the nine activists, said the lawsuit was filed on Friday, August 17, naming Madonna, the concert organizer and the venue, SKK Peterburgsky, as defendants. They were asking for damages totaling 333 million rubles aka $10.5 million.

Pochuyev also said they were using modern method to defend their rights despite the accusation that they live in Middle Ages for banning gay rights. "No one is burning anyone at the stake or carrying out an Inquisition. Modern civilization requires tolerance and respect for different values," the lawyer argued.

All-Female Version of 'The Expendables' Is Underway

Just in time for the release of "The Expendables 2", Variety shares the news that an all-female version of "The Expendables" is currently in the works. Producer Adi Shankar's 1984 Private Defense Contractor has agreed to back the female version of the star-studded actioner with Dutch Southern being tapped as the scribe.

Shankar's banner reportedly has already been in talks with some notable actresses in the action genre. However, details of those actresses who are approached to join the big project are still kept secret.

Fueling the report of the possible all-female "Expendables" is director Simon West who recently told E! News that he has set his eyes on several Hollywood leading ladies. "I like the idea of the Expenda-Belles where it's seven or eight women mercenaries," he said.

"It would be Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Milla Jovovich, the list goes on. Helen Mirren, Jamie Lee Curtis would be great." Terry Crews added, "I love Kate Beckinsale in 'Total Recall'. I would love to see Charlize Theron. She would be a sweet badass just doing some crazy stuff!"

West explained further that the female gang would not replace the Sylvester Stallone and co. in the franchise. "No, it would be running parallel," he said. "They would meet up and then they would fight and they would join up and save each other."

"The Expendables 2" has hit the U.S. theaters since Friday, August 17.

Lil Wayne Trusts Nicki Minaj's Creative Binges in 'Dedication 4' Mixtape

See larger image
Photo credit: Adriana M. Barraza/WENN Nicki Minaj is going to be featured in Lil Wayne's latest street album "Dedication 4". Unlike the previous records she made during her early career, the chart-topping femcee is now given a complete control of her rhymes while Weezy is "just sitting back watching, and seeing the fruits of his labor."

"I usually pick the beat when me and Wayne do something," she tells MTV. "I went to Miami and I started grilling him like, 'Hey, why don't you lecture me anyone?' and he says, 'You made it already I ain't got to tell you s***.' We had this crazy little spat - I actually got on footage and I'll show the fans really soon."

The rapstress continues, "But he's working on the mixtape and I said, 'Excuse me, I need to be on that mixtape,' and he said, 'Aight, whatever you wanna do.' So I just went into the other room and recorded on this particular beat that I'm sure my fans are gonna be very happy that I touched. I'm really excited for the kids to hear."

She says of the change, "It's like having a strict parent and when you no longer have it [you] kinda want that. I told him, 'I miss when you would lecture me and tell me to keep on my grind and do this do and do that - where's the love?'." She then does her impersonation of her mentor, "[Female Weezy voice] Yeah, you and Drake ya'll made it, ya'll don't f*** with a n***a no more."

"Dedication 4" was supposed to be released on August 15, but it was postponed to give a room for "Based on a T.R.U. Story" released by his homie 2 Chainz. "I refuse to put any attention on me when the spotlight, everybody's eyes, everybody's attention and everybody's focus should be on my n***a 2 Chainz's album 'Based On A T.R.U. Story'," he explained.

Usain Bolt: I'm Not Competing In England Again Until They Change Their Tax Rules

Usain Bolt’s gold medal-winning appearance at the London Olympics violated one of the athlete’s personal rules: Not to compete in Britain.
Bolt’s Olympic appearance marked the first time since 2009 that the phenom competed in the U.K., according to Forbes. Why is he staying away? The taxes on his winnings are just too much. Britain charges a 50 percent tax on the appearance fees and prize money of athletes competing in the country, according to The Week.
Though it’s common for countries to tax athletic winnings, the U.K. also has a rare policy of taxing income from sponsors earned while athletes are competing in the country, The Week reports. And despite earning $20.3 million last year, that's just too much for the self-proclaimed "legend."
Bolt, one of the world's most famous athletes, made an exception to his no-Britain rule for the Olympics, which were essentially tax-free for athletes, according to Forbes. But only if the country changes its tax laws will Bolt return, he says.
Bolt's low-tax argument doesn't appear as popular in the United States, where a proposal to offer U.S. Olympians a tax break on their medals has been met with controversy. President Obama faced criticism after backing a proposal by Republican Florida Senator Marco Rubio to exempt the honorariums that go along with Olympic medals from taxes.
Tax breaks for athletes aren’t the only contentious sports-related loophole. Major Olympic sponsors like McDonald’s, Coca-Cola and Visa said they wouldn’t take the tax break offered to them on profits they earned during the Olympics. The decision came after a petition from a non-profit group, though some of the companies emphasized that the protests had nothing to do with their decision

Congolese Music Star, Koffi Olomide, Sentenced To 3 Months In Prison In Assault Case-BBC

Koffi Olomide, one of Africa's most popular singers, has been given a three-month suspended prison sentence for assaulting his producer.
The rumba star, 56, was arrested after a fracas on Wednesday at a hotel in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Correspondents say the courtroom was packed to see the star, who leads the Quartier Latin band.
Olomide this year denied charges of raping three of his dancers in France.
The altercation with his producer, Diego Lubaki, was over a debt of 3,000 euros ($3,680, £2,345), the court heard.
'Door damaged'
Mr Lubaki said he wanted to drop the charges, but the judge continued the trial.
"He wanted to withdraw charges in favour of social peace and peace between him and the one he calls his 'big brother'," one of his lawyers is quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.
The court convicted Olomide of assault and battery but acquitted him of malicious destruction to property, after the hotel room door was damaged in the fight.
The music he plays is known as "soukous", which comes from the French word secouer, meaning to shake, and its dancers are renowned for their erotic moves.
Like other Congolese musicians, he is known for his extravagant lifestyle and flashy outfits.
Born in 1956, he won a scholarship to do a maths degree in France. On his return to the then-Zaire, he joined the band of musician Papa Wemba, initially as a songwriter.
He later struck out on his own and in the 1980s his soukous style gained popularity around Africa and he has won several Kora All Africa Music Awards.
However, his career has not been without controversy and the raunchy performances of some of his songs have been banned in some countries.
He sang in support of DR Congo's President Joseph Kabila during the 2006 election campaign, angering many of his fans in the opposition.
Olomide has battled to hold successful tours in Europe since then, as opposition supporters disrupt his concerts, the BBC's Patrice Chitera in Kinshasa says.

Zimbabwe – A BULAWAYO woman from Nkulumane 5 high-density suburb, who came home late at night from a party last Saturday and was thrown out of her matrimonial home by her angry husband, had to sleep in a toilet to save her marriage.

The woman, Mrs Suzanne Moyo, told Sunday News that she did not go to her parents’ house or friend’s home because she feared that her husband, Mr Nathan Moyo, would think she has a boyfriend and had slept at his house.

“I had no choice but to sleep in the toilet because my husband is a very difficult man. I did not come home late by design but I was held up by a friend who had collapsed and we had to take her to hospital. I apologised and told my husband the cause of my delay but he did not believe me.

“He beat me up and told me to go back to a boyfriend that I don’t even have. I chose to sleep in the toilet than to seek refuge at my parents’ home or at a friend’s because that would have made him think that I was really cheating on him,’’ said Mrs Moyo.

Mrs Moyo said as much as the toilet did not reek of human waste she had a nightmarish experience because she was afraid that someone would harm her.

“My toilet is clean so there was no bad smell at all but I had to contend with the hard floor, the cold and the fear that someone would break in and do me harm. But the utmost thing on my mind was that my marriage was on the rocks. I didn’t sleep the whole night, I cried nonstop and I was stressed.

“I don’t know what happened next, I must have dozed off because the next thing I remember was my husband waking me up and asking me what I was doing in the toilet. I think it was around three or four o’clock in the morning,’’ said Mrs Moyo.

After finding his wife miserable in the toilet, Mr Moyo felt pity for Mrs Moyo and took her back into the house.

“He told me to never do that again or he would leave me for good. If I had found a decent place to sleep I am sure I would not be home right now. We would still be fighting over this issue,’’ said Mrs Moyo.

Mr Moyo confirmed the incident but was reluctant to shed more light.

“As far as I am concerned that is in the past. What happened happened we cannot keep on dwelling on the past. I don’t want to talk about it,’’ he said.

Alicia Keys Announces Her New Album 'Girl on Fire'

See larger image
Alicia Keys reveals the official title of her next studio installment. "I've had the title of this album in my mind for a long time...It's been hard to hold it back and now I'm not holding it back anymore! It is called 'Girl on Fire'!!! And that's exactly how I feel!!!" she gushes in a newest blog post on her official website.

"Let me just say before making this record, in some ways I felt like a lion locked in a cage...I felt like a girl misunderstood that no one really knew, I felt like it was time to stop making excuses for any part of my life that I wanted to change. Once I made that choice I became a Girl on Fire, the lion broke free!!" she explains.

"I traveled to different places, and worked with many collaborators, (some old friends, some new). I discovered so many beautiful sounds, and meanings and a lot about the power of a song," she adds. "I promise when you hear it, it's a new me, I gave it my all: powerful, soulful, honesty and heart... With Girl on Fire, I want to move you and surprise you."

"Girl on Fire is about new beginnings, new perspectives and fresh starts... stripping away all the bad energy in your life and taking full control of the reigns and how you want to live. There is something really empowering about finding yourself and your own inner strength. On one song, One of the lines I wrote says, 'I'll never be perfect, but at least now I'm brave!' "

Alicia Keys is set to debut one of her new songs at 2012 MTV Video Music Awards on September 6. "Debuting a new song at the VMAs is definitely special. I debuted 'No One' at the VMAs - it was the first time anyone in the world heard 'No One'," she says. "And there's no better place in the whole wide world than the VMAs to do that, so it's gonna be crazy

Policeman arraigned for shooting girlfriend’s sister

The police on Tuesday arraigned Emmanuel Okujo, a 31-year-old police corporal, who allegedly shot his girlfriend’s sister, Blessing Isanbor, with an AK47 rifle on February 10, 2012.
Okujo, who also absconded with the victim’s 19-year-old sister, Patience Isanbor, was charged with attempted murder before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court.
The charge reads in part, “That you Emmanuel Okujo on February 10, 2012, at about 8:30pm, at 10, Ifateyindo Street, Gbagada, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial district did attempt to murder one Blessing Isanbor by shooting her with your K2 Police service gun with serial number 64487 which inflicted injury on her left cheek contrary to Section 228 (1) and punishable under Section 228 (2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Cap 17 vol.44 Laws of Lagos State Nigeria 2011.”
Okujo pleaded not guilty and the magistrate, Mrs. J.A Anabor, granted him N100, 000 bail with two sureties, including a landed property owner in the state.
The case was adjourned till October 19, 2012.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Blessing needs more money to carry out another facial reconstruction surgery.
Blessing has undergone one surgery which was paid for by three non-governmental organisations and her family.

The Director, Project Alert on Violence Against Women, Dr. Josephine Effa-Chukwuma, said her organisation had raised some money for Blessing’s second surgery scheduled for August 9.
She said, “Project Alert on Violence Against Women in collaboration with Centre for Organisational Development and Zahara Women Foundation has raised some funds in support of Blessing’s second surgery which will take place on Thursday.

“However, more money will be needed for her third and final surgery which will take place in a few weeks.”
After the alleged shooting, Blessing was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where she was admitted for four months and 13 days.

Our correspondent, who visited Blessing at her residence recently, observed that she still hand bandage on her jaw but her talking had improved.

Blessing said she still had pains in her left cheek, which was still swollen. She added that she found it hard to eat or even sleep.

She lamented that it was hard to adjust to the condition and feared that she would not be able to continue with her education.

Blessing’s uncle, Steven Isanbor, told PUNCH Metro that he was not satisfied with the role of the police in the matter.

“Okujo was attached to Ifako Police Division before the incident occurred. After the shooting, the Divisional Police Officer gave us N65, 000 but this is very little compared to the over N1.4m which has been spent so far,” he said.

Beggars protest removal from Lagos roads

LAGOS—Hundreds of beggars, yesterday, staged a peaceful protest to the Lagos State House Assembly, Alausa, Ikeja, over their removal from the streets in the state.

President of the Association of Physically-Challenged, Alhaji Jubril Hassan, said the government was wrong to have asked beggars to stay off the streets where they were enjoying their social rights. Hassan also said it was illegal to deny them their fundamental freedom of movement.

Hassan said: “We adopted this medium to express our displeasure and unhappiness with the actions taken and the one to be taken by the Lagos State Government. “Our movement within Lagos metropolis has been restricted such that anyone caught roaming the street is taken to Majidun Rehabilitation Centre.”

He explained that in most cases, all their belongings were seized, while they were also maltreated by the management of the camp. He said: “The condition of the camp is appalling and devastating, it causes more harm to our health. It has come to our notice that very soon anybody found giving us alms will be apprehended and imprisoned for two years.”

He, therefore, appealed to the government to rescind its decision of denying beggars the right to move freely within the state. According to him, the policy will further aggravate their suffering, instead of alleviating it. He called on the media, non-government organisations and human rights activists to come to their aid.

The Secretary of the association, Mr. Zakariwai Hassan, claimed that no fewer than 600 beggars had been arrested by the government without providing adequate alternative for them.
Hassan urged the government to look into their plight and allow them to continue with their daily activities in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria,NAN, reported that the protesters were received by Mr. Babatunde Panox, Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde Fashola on Security as the assemblymen were on recess. He advised them not to take the law into their hands, promising that the government would find solutions to their problems.

I Am Not A Legend Yet – Usain Bolt

Usain Bolt insists he cannot be considered a legend until he wins gold in the 200m final
.
Bolt smashed the field in Sunday night’s 100m final to retain his title, clocking an Olympic record of 9.63 seconds to see off a stellar line-up, with every man bar the injured Asafa Powell going under 10 seconds.

Reigning world champion and training partner Yohan Blake took silver in 9.75s and 2004 champion Justin Gatlin the bronze in 9.79.

“This gold means I am one step closer to being a legend so I’m working toward that,” Bolt – who confirmed he was unaware of an incident which saw a bottle thrown on to the track just before they starting gun fired – said. “That’s just one step, I have the 200m to go so I can’t celebrate.”

The bottle incident saw a Dutchman arrested and Bolt said he did not hear the bottle land just metres behind him just before he launches himself down the track to glory.

“No, I keep hearing that,” he said. “I don’t know who would have done that. The atmosphere was wonderful. I knew it was going to be like this. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that it was going to be loud and it was going to be great and you can feel that energy.”

He admits he enjoyed Sunday night’s triumph even more than Beijing: “The reason it’s sweeter is because a lot of guys doubted me so I had to show the world I am the greatest.

“It means a lot because there were a lot of people doubting me, it was great to come out and show I am still number one, I am still the best.

“I’ve said it from the start, people can talk, all they can do is talk. I tell you people that when it comes to the championships it’s all about business to me and I brought it.

“The trials woke me up. Yohan gave me a wake-up call. He knocked on my door and said ‘Usain, this is an Olympic year, wake up’, so I am grateful for that moment because after that I got my head together, got my head in the game.

RIM to unveil new PlayBook line

Canada’s Research In Motion has chosen its home country to launch a PlayBook tablet with built-in support for cellular networks, a crucial feature missing from its poor-selling initial models.

The BlackBerry maker said on it would launch the new tablets in Canada next week and roll them out in coming months in the United States, Europe, South Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, according to Reuters.

The PlayBook tablet, introduced more than a year ago, is strategically important for RIM as it is the first product to use the QNX operating system that RIM is adapting for a new generation of BlackBerry phones designed to compete with sexier devices already on the market.

But the PlayBook was widely criticized at launch for lacking basic features such as email, and it has failed to wow consumers despite sharp discounts and a major software upgrade.

RIM has so far only sold Wi-Fi capable PlayBook devices and this has played a role in making the device less attractive to potential buyers, as users would need access to a Wi-Fi network or to tether the device to the BlackBerry to use the Internet
.
The new device will run on the latest 4G LTE networks that offer high-speed data downloads capabilities. Long Term Evolution technology is being widely deployed by carriers both in North America and overseas, as smartphone adoption has increased and boosted demand for wireless data downloads.

The 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook tablet will come with 32 gigabytes of memory and will be available from major Canadian carriers like BCE Inc’s Bell, Rogers Communications Inc and Telus Corporation in Canada on August 9.

Lagos, Samsung develop capacity for training electronics engineers

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Eko Secondary Education Project, a World Bank assisted initiative aimed at improving the quality of public secondary education, has partnered with Samsung Electronics West Africa to provide training and job opportunities in electronics engineering for students in the state.
Critical to this partnership was the inauguration of the Samsung Engineering Academy, the first of its kind in Lagos as part of the firm’s goal to develop 10, 000 electronics engineers across Africa by 2015.
The academy, equipped with the latest electronics, is aimed at addressing the dearth of technical and engineering skills in Nigeria by providing hands-on, technical skills training for secondary school students.
Governor Babatunde Fashola while inaugurating the facility in Lagos, said there was an urgent need to develop technical skills in students in Nigeria, noting that existing technicians must have knowledge that are relevant to modern technology.
He said, “Upcoming technicians must be exposed to cutting-edge technology if they must remain competitive. There is no doubt that a sound knowledge of modern technology is the most important resource for entrepreneurship and wealth creation for technicians.”
Fashola commended Samsung for partnering with the state government on the academy, stressing that the college was not only a knowledge hub but would also open up job opportunities for the people of Lagos.
This, he said, was in line with his administration’s drive to create jobs, especially for young citizens.
On the partnership, the Managing Director, Samsung Electronics West Africa, Mr. Nicholas Shin, said, “Our aim is to promote cooperation, innovation, wealth creation and to facilitate thought leadership in communities where we operate in response to the real need and conditions.
“Samsung Engineering Academy is our CSR initiative, undertaken in response to the need to train skilled workforce of technicians who will become service experts empowered to create wealth. Samsung as a quality service-oriented company aims to link CSR activities to sustain our level of innovation, which can only be achieved if we invest in quality education to empower the youth.”
According to him, students selected will go through a year’s programme in engineering skills, aligned to technical school curriculum. Upon completion of the programme, graduating students are automatically eligible for internship at Samsung’s Channel partners.
Shin explained that outstanding performers stood a good opportunity to work as independent service technicians or employees in the company’s retail channel outlets, adding that they were also qualified to participate in a year-long leadership opportunity at Samsung Electronics headquarters in South Korea as part of the 100 African young leaders programme.
Samsung started the first phase of the academies in South Africa in March 2011. The South African Academy officially ended its pilot phase of the programme as the first class of students graduated in January, 2012. In February, a second Academy was launched in Kenya.
The academies are a part of the company’s global ‘Hope for Children’ initiative, which places a strategic focus on bringing attention to the worldwide need for childhood education and health care in an effort to improve communities worldwide.
